During our stay in panteleimos, marc and i decidet to head towards the olympos mountain for a little stroll out with our bikes. While drifting up and down narrow slopes, i suddenly smelled a familiar smell… gearbox oil
A closer inspection of my bike revealed the problem, the sealing of my back-wheel gearbox had broke. With a much slower pace, we drove back to the camp and i started to take the thing apart. After a closer look, i saw that the o-ring was a little damaged and a i fixed it with some silicone from the nearby do-it store.
Since i was not finished with the repair the next morning, marc hit the road early and i agreed to meet him a couple hours later at the coast side.
After a long saying goodbye to alex and his family i left panteleimos to the agreed meeting point.
As i arrived in gerakini, marc was already there, sunbathing. After a quick shopping in the nearby marked, we took on our road and drove along the beautyfull coastside until our first half-wild camping at the beach of Stratoni. Funny enough, i strandet in Stratoni last year during my trip to iran while loosing my way. There i had met an old artist and restaurant owner which spoke a great french and with i had talked longly. And like last year, also this year i met the man and his wife, and where were greeted happily. After a beer we went for a swim and put up our tents at the beach. While marc went to bed early, i used the time to chat with some locals and have a look at one of the infamous beachpartys of Stratoni… with the fact, that stratoni has about 1000 inhabitant, the party was quite impressive ![]()
The next day, we went on to reach lake ochrid in mazedonia, which we did after riding quite a while on one of the impressive, EU-sponsered highway of greece and through the border-region of mazedonia. As we reached the border of mazedonia i suddently realized, that my passport was missing… from all the greeting, i had forgot to pick up my passport. But since i had my ID with me, i thought it would be fine.
After a well earned beer in front of the lakeside on the main place in ohrid, we looked out for a nice place to put up our tents and since ochrid is such a touristic place, we had to drive quite a while along the seaside to find a cosy place to sleep. After a spectacular sunset we went to tent tired but happy.
The next day, we went for the town of tetovo, where marc knew a buddy of him in vacation there. It turned out, that his buddys where really nice guys, which drove us up to the hill to show us a spectacular view of the city. Shortly after, marc felt the urge to ride along and we left the two to head towards the border of kosovo. As we arrived there, a friendly border patrol guy told me, that i was not allowed in kosovo without my passport which i had forgot in greece. So we headed towards the albanian border where i was told it would be no problem to enter the country. On the way back, we found a nice little mountain road on the map which we could not find in real life. Since it was already late, we decided to call it a day and put up our tents right beside the little road in the middle of the mountains. The next morning, while we were enjoying our morning coffee, a car stoped besides us and an old man stepped out to explain us the route which we had missed the day before. Motivated by his “dobro with bmw” we raced across a motocross worthy path up the hill and we spend the next two hours sliding and bumping across the hills. On our way back, we even met a truck with second trailer at the back heading opposite direction. We still can’t imagine how those guys made it up that muddy and rocky path witch was barely a car-wide. Since the shortcut over the mountains saved us time, we headed through “madmax” like sceneries towards shkoder, the second biggest city in albania. As the road took us quite a while and i also slowed us down by producing my first bail on official roads, we took the road to the nearby vally where we put up our tent. There, unfortunately, marc and i had a argument and after having extensivly thought about what was the matter, i decidet to split up and travel the rest of the road alone.
After a very nice and fresh ride through montenegro and the “republica Serbska” part of Bosnia, i found myself at the entrance of my favourite Harris Youth Hostel in Sarajevo and i was warmly greeted by the mother of harris. After a nice beer and a even nicer shower (probably the best shower i had in my life) i went for a little strawl with medi, the hostel dog.
Right now, i’m enjoying the second beer with a friendly australian couple and i gonna have dinner and a beer in town with my friend Julie.
Anyway folks… enjoy the day and have a nice time
